Al Wasl, fusing modern with traditional in a new city identity
The identity we created for a new city development near Riyadh has just launched. Al Wasl means ‘crossroads’ and, when built, will be the largest city in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Our challenge was in creating an identity for a future city when all that exists at the moment is a vast landscape. Instead of using generic renders, we developed illustrations that indicate what it would be like to live in Al Wasl. The identity system fuses modern and traditional style, incorporates Arabic patterns, and features five life stories which function as key selling tools in providing poignant stimuli for initial conversations about the city.

On September 25th, Uri Baruchin gave a presentation at the Strategic Branding forum in Romania. We used this opportunity to bring together some of our central ideas about how branding should be practiced in order to succeed in our rapidly changing world.

Engagement conference of the year: Engage 08
Aaron Shields and Sam Holmes exhibited and facilitated at this excellent conference organised by Osney Media. There was discussion over a wide range of topics from using the brand to drive engagement to using social media in intranet communications. There was an interesting talk from NASA about the empirical proof behind their engagement processes, including confirmation that multi-tasking is less efficient than doing one thing at a time. It was clear to us that engagement means different things to different people. There was quite a bit of consensus that there is only one brand, and that allowing the employer brand to become separated out is unnecessary and risky.

Al Rajhi Type Directors Club award
We were delighted to hear that the bespoke typeface we created for Al Rajhi won the Certificate of Excellence in Type Design and is included in an exhibition touring the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Russian and Spain. It was also Judge’s Choice and will feature at the front of the Annual of the Type Directors Club, Typography 29, when it is published shortly.
